He was predeceased by: his parents, Willis Coates and Eva Nell Coates (James); and his siblings, Rick and Kathy. He is survived by: his wife Pat; his siblings, John (Debbie), Bill (Angie), David (Lindsay) and Barbara (Joe); his sister-in-law Kathy (John); and also, Heather (Paul) and Paulie. He is also survived by many nieces, nephews, grand-nieces, and grand-nephews.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the charity of one's choice.
