He was predeceased by: his parents, Louis Bates and Dorothy Bates. He is survived by: his siblings, David Bates (Marianne) and Kate Myers; his daughters, Robin Bates and Dawn Bates DeLancey (Chris); his grandchildren, Sarah (Frank), Joel and Philip; and his great grandchild Dominic.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations may be made to Benincasa (hospice), whose staff and volunteers provided warm, caring attention to Donald and his family.
