He was predeceased by: his parents, John Gates and Ethel Gates (Foster); his siblings, Kenneth Gates (Gladys), Phyllis Mignerey and Jan Delaney; his in-laws, Burr Don and Bernetta Singer; his brothers-in-law, Donald Singer, Owen Koster Sr. and Jeffrey Donovan; and his nephews, Owen Koster Jr., Donald Koster and Warren Mignerey, Jr..
He is survived by: his wife Sharon; his children, John Jr., Cynthia Gates, Judi, Bobby Ingraham, Jeffery and Tara Gates; his grandchildren, Troy, Tyler, Trenton, Zoe and Shane Gates; his siblings, Lois Lum (Dick), Thomas Gates (Joan), Daniel Gates, Alice Donovan and Gregg Gates; his brother-in-law Warren Mignerey, Sr.; and also, Yvonne Woodruff (Dan) and Sandra Koster. He is also survived by many nieces, nephews and cousins.
