He was predeceased by: his parents, Charles Francis Coates and Esther Lund Coates; and his sister Marlene. He is survived by: his wife Priscilla Doig Coates; his stepchildren, Andrew, Lori, Noah, Harriet, Evelyn, Stephen, Wendy, Robert, Vaughn, Elliot, Charles, Martina, Michaela and Stefanie; his niece Donna Banta (Mark); his great-nephew Mark Banta, Jr. (Meera); his great-niece Emily Banta (Daniel); and also, Keya, Maya and Max. He is also survived by three sons and their spouses.
To the end Dr. Coates also maintained critical attention upon current events, including what he saw as the lack of an appropriate public health response to the Covid-19 pandemic.
