He was predeceased by: his parents, Francis Bates and Flosie Bates (Smith); and his siblings, Richard Bates, Pauline Stratton, Mary Wagner, Nancy Gleason and Lois Ellis.
He is survived by: his girlfriend Wilma Storm (Hallett); his children, Donnie Bates (JoAnn) and Jenifer Miller; his siblings, Barbra Jones, Roger Bates and Linda Frey (John); his grandchildren, Bradley, Leah, Poppy, Andrea and Kathryn; and his great grandchildren, Grady, McKenna and Sage. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews.
