He was predeceased by: his parents, Mac Szala and Dolores Szala (Niski); and his sister Joan Downey. He is survived by: his wife Deborah A. Szala (Trainosky); his children, Nicole Szala of Scotia and Christopher Szala of Glenville; his brother Timothy Szala of Amsterdam; his brother-in-law Michael Downey of Rensselaer; his uncle Edward; his nephew Brian Downey (Stacey); and his niece Kristen Mantello (Sylvio).
