He was predeceased by: his parents, Peter Johnson and Martha Johnson (Paintner); and his brothers, Jonas Brinson, B. Johnson, Limmie Johnson, Willie Johnson, Eddie Johnson, Peter Johnson and T. Bo.

He is survived by: his wife Lovie Gardner; and his sisters, Martha Freeman, Rosabell Brinson, Nancy Martin and Betty Hudson. He is also survived by nieces, nephews and friends.
