He was predeceased by: his parents, Beverly "Bud" McGovern and Doris Brooker McGovern; and his brother Barry McGovern. He is survived by: his children, Mike McGovern (Melissa) and Jeanne McGovern (Jason Osness); his siblings, Ronnie McGovern, Barbara McGovern (Terry McGovern) and Mary Roman (Joanne Jordan); and his grandson Marshal Osness. He is also survived by many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
