He was predeceased by: his parents, John L. Benson Sr. and Dorothy Gelwicks Benson; his parents-in-law, Adele and Louis V. Shuback; and his brother-in-law Louis M. Shuback.
He is survived by: his wife Donna Shuback Benson; his children, John Augustyn Jr. (Lyanne), James Augustyn (Robyn), Jenna Benson Chapman, Mark Augustyn and Christine; his grandchildren, Sophia, Quinn, Max, Corinne, Sydney, Alexander and Nicholas; his siblings, Richard Benson (Linda), Jo-Ann Morreale, Bill Benson (Kathy), Carol Frye (Ken) and Linda Yearwood (Bill); his brothers-in-law, Richard Shuback (Diane) and Rob Shuback; and his grandmother Annie Benson. He is also survived by numerous nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews and cousins.
