Tom Brandt wrote a sympathy message

“Even though I was his annoying little brother, Bernie never ever said a harsh word or displayed anger or impatience toward me - ever. He was, in so many ways, my mentor and protector growing up. He taught me much about working on cars, hunting, guns, protecting myself and driving in snow on winter roads. He was truly a gentle giant to me. Though I'm glad his suffering is over, I'll miss his laugh and long conversations. Love you big brother, enjoy your new world, you deserve it.”
