He was predeceased by : his wife Avis Payne (Pope); his siblings, Wesley Payne and Wilma Kean; and his son-in-law Ed Sivola. He is survived by : his children, Douglas Payne (Laurie), Susan Sivola, Anne Fessler (Freeman), Donald Payne (Cathy) and Thomas Payne; and his sisters, Evelyn Kahrs, Asenath Burns (Allan) and Joyce Church (Richard). He is also survived by 18 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Farmington United Methodist Church.
