He was predeceased by: his parents, Robert Hays and Mildred Long Hays; his wife Patricia Johnston Hays; his son-in-law Scott Redick; and his siblings, Carol Peters, Olive Saro, MaryLou Terrill, Agnes Hunt, Roger and Gary Hays.

He is survived by: his pet Callie; his children, Roxanne Redick of Lakewood, Susan Thompson (Dan) of Falconer and Tom Hays (Lori) of Jamestown; his grandchildren, Amanda Tanner, Scott Thompson (Theresa) and Morgan Hays; his great grandchild Colton Thompson; and his brothers, James Hays (Barbara) of Kiantone and Lawrence Hays (Laquita) of Apopko, FL..
