He was predeceased by: his parents, Pearl Rubin (Jacobs) and Morris Rubin; and his brothers, Saul and Alan. He is survived by: his wife Lucille Schutmaat Rubin; his children, Brian, Jennifer and Rebecca; his sons-in-law, Nicholas and Lee; and his grandchildren, Rachel, Brian Jr., Julia and Cadence.

In 2010, Joel was honored with the Wally Russell Foundation's Lifetime Achievement Award for his contributions to the advancement of theatre lighting.
