She is survived by: her children, Karen Thornton, Bruce McDonald, Susan Eileen Thornton-Smith and Christopher William Maurice; her grandsons, John Edward Smith and Christopher Juan Lopez; her sisters, Beverly Childress and Barbara Lucas; and her sisters-in-law, Dr. Emma Jean Shepard, Alberta Kimbrough and Estelle Lavender. She is also survived by nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
