He was predeceased by: his parents, Donald Mitchell and Dora Mitchell (Miner); his brother Donald Mitchell; and his sister-in-law Catherine Mitchell. He is survived by: his wife Rita Bolia of Dannemora; his sons, Andrew (Michelle Mitchell), Donald (Erin Mitchell) and Aaron (Allison Mitchell); his siblings, Patrick (Lee Mitchell), John (Maureen Mitchell), Mary Ann (Winston Lawliss) and Tina (Tom Oddi); and his grandchildren, Ashley, Amara, Gavyn, Zoee, Adelynn, Gwenyth, Kassidy, Grayson and Elliott Mae. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews.
