He was predeceased by: his parents, Paul Betts and Ortha Betts (Mattison); his wife Valerie Knickerbocker; his stepson Robert Martin Betts, Jr.; and his brother Lester Betts.
He is survived by: his sons, James Betts (Gina) of Garner, NC, John Betts (Candy) of Corning, NY and Thomas Betts (Claire Wilshire) of Clayton, NC; his grandchildren, Jesse Ballance, Andrea Smith-Betts, John Robert Betts, Mirranda Betts, Aaron Betts, Robert Martin Betts, III and Linda; and his brothers, Paul T. Betts (Patricia) of Rock Stream, NY and Layton E. Betts of Painted Post, NY. He is also survived by 2 great grandchildren, many cousins, nieces and nephews.
