He was loved and cherished by many people including: his parents, Charles McGowan and Lillian McGowan; his wife Ellen McGowan; his children, Debra Newton, John McGowan, Kenneth McGowan and Matthew McGowan; his stepdaughters, Candace Cain and Terrie Cain; his brother-in-law David Hibbard; his children-in-law, Joann McGowan, Charlotte McGowan, James Newton and Skip Smith; his grandchildren, Brett McGowan, Benjamin McGowan, David McGowan, Devin McGowan and Shane McGowan; and his great grandchildren, Aiden McGowan, Luke, Jacob, Eli McGowan, Virginia, Josyln McGowan, Jonathan and Julianna Locke.
