Paul Cawein Obituary

In loving memory of Paul Cawein of Chautauqua, New York, born in Hamilton, Ohio, who departed this world on July 6, 2024 at the age of 93. Paul leaves behind a legacy remembered by family and friends. Family and friends are welcome to leave their condolences on this memorial page and share them with the family.

As Paul departs from this earthly realm, his essence lingers — a whisper on the wind, a ripple on the water — a testament to the enduring power of love to transcend the boundaries of life and death. Though Paul may no longer walk beside us, his spirit lives on in the memories and the legacy Paul leaves behind.

He was predeceased by: his parents, Emile Cawein and Elsa Cawein; and his siblings, Donald, Howard Cawein and Ruth Cawein.

He is survived by: his nieces, Jill Hopkins (John) of Avon Lake, OH and Jane Cammann (Chuck Engle) of Columbus, OH; and his nephew Thomas Cawein (Margaret) of Laguna Niguel, CA.

Donations may be made to the Chautauqua Opera Guild or Mayville Food Pantry.

Claire Iveson wrote a sympathy message

“To Paul's nieces and nephew, Paul and Ralph lived several blocks away from me in Washington. Meeting them through Art Leabman, we four often spent evenings together. So many wonderful meals, parties, holiday celebrations! When Paul was finishing his dissertation, he asked me to type it. This was a wonderful time for the two of us to be together. Precious time. After I'd moved to San Francisco, we kept in touch. Attached are photos from 1974, when he purchased my DOROTHY PARKER painting.”
