He was predeceased by: his parents, Kenneth J. Shafer and Marian L. Adams Shafer; his former wife Patricia Shafer; his wife Marjorie Szarowicz Shafer; his stepdaughter Lollie Frary; and his brothers, William, David and Kenneth Shafer, Jr..
He is survived by: his children, Bart Shafer (Stephanie), John H. Shafer, Jr. (Paula), Charles Shafer and Diana Peterson (Brian); his grandchildren, Amber Peterson, Brandon Peterson, Kalene Shafer, Jessica Shafer, Justin Shafer, Zachery Shafer and Jessica Agen; his stepchildren, Charlene Power, Bobbie Jo Wendell and Charles Wendell; and his sisters, Sandra Shafer and Deborah Shafer. He is also survived by five great grandchildren.
