He was loved and cherished by many people including: his parents, John Heiser and Annamae Heiser (Barrett); his close friend Mary Beth Norton; and his cousins, Sharon Knorr of Alto, Steve Barrett of Carlsbad, CA, John Ford of Fairfield, CA, Pat Rowland of Greenwood, IN and Elaine Nonella of Lodi, CA.

“John was my favorite teacher at Cornell. I was fortunate to first meet John as a student in the early 1970s, I took several courses taught by him and with his support attended Shoals Marine Lab twice. With John's booming voice, it was easy to hear him, even at the back of the class. I always looked forward to his lectures not only because of his infectious enthusiasm, but also his boundless knowledge of zoology. I kept in touch with him over the years and am very sad to hear of his passing. I'm sure his many students who were influenced by him feel the same way.”
