He was predeceased by: his parents, John Cranston and Zelia Cranston (Hare); his wife Georgeann Watson; his brothers, John and Gerard Cranston; and his daughter Laura Cranston.

He is survived by: his children, Maura Kemmer (Michael) and James Cranston Jr. (Svetlana); and his grandchildren, Cameron, Tyler Kemmer, Alek and Anya Cranston. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews.
