He was loved and cherished by many people including: his parents, Charles Smith and Margaret Cronk Smith; his spouse Lynn Hartling; his children, Kristin L. Smith of Canastota, Kara Smith of Tucson, Arizona, Charles R. Smith of Washington, D. C. and Richard S. Smith (Stephanie) of Chittenango; his grandchildren, Brenna, Jacob, Duncan and Cooper Smith; and his sister Julie Smith of Brookline, Massachusetts. He was also cherished by several nieces and nephews.
