He was predeceased by: his parents, Charles S. Burgen, and Rosina Zumkeller Burgen, Sr.; his wife Mary Margaret "Margo" Joslin; his sister Carol Matla; and his brothers-in-law, Gerald Matla and Richard Burdick.

He is survived by: his children, Jacqueline Leah Schur of Churchville, Charles S. Burgen III (Denise) and Gary S. Burgen Rochester (Tiffany); his grandchildren, Rachel (David), Daniel, Charles IV (Samantha), Michael, Jenna, Shannon (Anthony), Kaitlyn, Caitlyn (Daniel) and Jillian; his great grandchildren, Leah and David; his sister Eileen Burdick of Clay; and his siblings-in-law, Judy and Peter Mariano of Cleveland, Ohio. He is also survived by several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Contributions, in his memory, may be made to the Canastota American Legion or the charity of one's choice.
