He was predeceased by: his parents, Katherine M. Smith and Clarence W. Smith; and his stepfather Jack Davis. He is survived by: his children, Sandy Maiola (Joe) of Herkimer, Stephen Smith (Carol) of Camden, Scott Smith (Tamie) of North Bay, Chris Smith (Christine) of Sandy Creek and David Smith (Lorie Lescenski) of Camden; his sisters, Joan Littler of Hillsboro and Barbara LaHart (Gary) of McConnellsville; and his grandchildren, Nicole Maiola, Shelly Cristman (Andrew), Justin (Tonya), Nathan (Chelsea), Tyler (Samantha), Lindsey (Mike), Matthew (Gina), Allison, Emily Smith (Hannah), Tabatha Higgins (Brendan), Melissa Golbach and Andrew Conley. He is also survived by 23 great grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.
