He was predeceased by: his parents, James Cooney and Catherine Cooney (Flanagan). He is survived by: his wife Janice B. Cooney (Carmody); his children, James S. Cooney (Erin), Michael J. Cooney (Erin) and Keri GaNun (Tim); his grandchildren, James, Timmy, Regan, Keira, Brendan, Matthew, Brigid and Mike; his great grandchild Eleanor; his brother Robert Cooney (Charlene); and his siblings-in-law, James Carmody, Richard Carmody (LeeAnn) and Christine Denver (Gerard). He is also survived by many nieces and nephews.
