He was predeceased by: his sisters, Maxine Reed and Evelyn Spurlin; and his grandson-in-law T. L. Osburn. He is survived by: his wife Rosemary; and his children, Gilbert D. Johnson (Marybeth), Malinda Powell (Steve), Carmella Patterson and Kirk Johnson (Patty). He is also survived by thirteen grandchildren; twenty-four great-grandchildren.

The family suggests memorials be made in the name of Gilbert "Buck" Johnson to Alzheimer's Foundation, 225 North Michigan Avenue, Floor 17, Chicago, Illinois 60601.
