He was predeceased by: his parents, Herbert McElwain and Emma McElwain (Dineen); and his children, Herbert J. McElwain, Kenneth A. McElwain, Jr. and Jerilyn McElwain.

He is survived by: his children, Valorie Good of Bombay, Rodney McElwain of Bombay and Sarahlyn Dominy of South Carolina; and his grandchildren, James McElwain (Patricia), Wendy Terrance (Jarrad), Cassandra Stahl (Brian), Nicholas Martin (Chelsea) and Tai Martin. He is also survived by several great grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
