He was predeceased by: his former wife Glenna Kelly; and his brother David Kelly. He is survived by: his wife Bonnie Kelly (Karns); his children, James Kelly IV (Berit), Kathy Morris (Patrick), L. V. Pecora, Michael Plakus (Dawn), Ron Plakus and Melinda Kelsey (Rob); his sister-in-law Penny Kelly; his grandchildren, Josh, Carina, Julie (E. J.), Jimmy, Torger, Veronica, Elliot and Santo; and his great grandchild Shelby. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews.
