He was predeceased by: his parents, Fred Barnes and Louise Barnes (Cook); and his siblings, Rita Jacobs, Josephine Mitchell, Gerald Barnes and Louis Barnes.
He is survived by: his wife Erica I. Square; his children, Darrel S. Barnes of Bombay, Gerald L. Barnes of Maryland, Randy L. Barnes of Akwesasne, Anthony M. Barnes of Akwesasne, Allena Jacobs of Brushton and Nolan Jacobs of Akwesasne; his grandchildren, Mariah, Darrel, Brett, Kayanna, Tobias, Mycah, Riley, Elgin, Kendrix, Ryan, Nathan, Kyle and Jackson; his great grandchild Lucas; and his sister Marcia Thompson. He is also survived by many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Memorial contributions may be made in his memory to the Potsdam Animal Shelter.
