He was predeceased by: his wife Jovita Mancillas; his son Robert; his grandsons, Ronald J. and Vincent; his parents, Jose Tavares and Maura Tavares (Mancillas); his brothers, Pete and Morrie Tavares; his grandson Patrick V. Dillon; and his niece Alice Rangel (Tavares).
He is survived by: his children, Richard V. Tavares of Santa Fe, NM, Jo Sheehan (Bob) of Arlington Heights, IL, Cynthia Dillon (Jack) of Manassas, VA and Rita Tavares of Las Vegas, NV; his sister Mary Helen Tetuan (Tavares) of Topeka, KS; his grandchildren, JoAnne Stanley (Sheehan), Karen Sheehan, John Dillon, Andrew Frankwick, Valerie Abe (Frankwick), Derek and Jessica Tavares; his great grandchildren, Jack, Elaine, Sophie Frankwick, Clare, Elliot Stanley, Olivia and Emilia Abe; his niece Jenny Tavares; his nephews, Pete Tavares (Elena), Frank Tavares (Jenelyn), Thomas Tavares (Jenny), Marc Tavares (Yumi), Paul Tavares and Gene Tavares; and also Mireya Bernal.
Due to the ongoing pandemic, a memorial service and military interment will be conducted in suburban Chicago at St. Michael the Archangel Cemetery in Palatine, Illinois, later in 2020 on a date yet to be determined.
