He was predeceased by: his parents, James Mack Stephenson and Sina Melinda Sutterfield; and his sisters, Zelma Ballenger, JoAnn Daly and Nancy Smith.

He is survived by: his spouse Lorraine Mae O'Toole of San Francisco; his sons, Bret Alan Stephenson and Michael Robert Stephenson; his brother James Stephenson of Milwaukee, OR.; his niece Judy Merskey of San Diego; and his grandchildren, Cailin T. Stephenson and Jeremy Stephenson.
