He was predeceased by: his parents, Howard Smith and Lilah Smith; his brother Howard "Toby" Smith; his grandson Emil Schmidt; and his great grandchild Gwenevere Bush.
He is survived by: his wife Renate; his children, Jason Smith (Roxanne), Mistie McKeever (Kyle), Tanja Dikhoff (Jochen), Tori Smith and Lorraine Pepin (Scott); and his siblings, Allard Smith (Elaine), Kay Sagvold and JoDell Smith. He is also survived by 15 grandchildren, 6 great-grandchildren.
