He was predeceased by: his parents, William Wolfel and Myrtle Wolfel; his former wife Lee Wolfel; his brothers, Gus Wolfel and Bill Wolfel; and his stepson Tyson LaCour.

He is survived by: his wife Cynthia Wolfel; his children, Steve Wolfel of Los Alamos, NM and Donna Hale of Sammamish, WA; his siblings-in-law, Steve Sherrill of Edgewood, NM and Pam Sherrill of Aurora, CO; his friends, Dr. Frank, Susan DiMotta of Ruidoso, NM and James Smith of Albuquerque, NM; and his stepson Terrell LaCour.

Dr. Wolfel had served as chair of the LCMC Foundation since 2011.
