He was predeceased by: his parents, Myfanwy Evans Cowan and James H. Cowan; his wife Frances J. Phillips Cowan of Paonia; and his siblings, George T. Cowan, Dorwyn E. Cowan, James T. Cowan, Artamus Abseck and Floraine Buckley.
He is survived by: his children, Donald M. Cowan (Andrea) of Las Cruces, NM, Chella C. Gottsponer (Gary) of Las Cruces, NM and Margo R. Morris (Robert) of Lexingon, TX.; his grandchildren, Deirdre J. Rice (James) of Gloucester, VA, Heather B. Cowan (Shawn Fricke) of Albuquerque, NM, Kristi L. Gottsponer of Las Cruces, NM, Brigit C. Smiley (Lake) of Kingston, OK and Joshua A. Morris of Lexington, TX; and his great grandchildren, Hannah N. Rice, Jonathan J. Rice, Morgan W. Smiley, Finn A. Cowan-Fricke, Latham C. Smiley and Hudson C. Cowan-Fricke.
