He was predeceased by: his parents, Joe Frank Scates and Flora Stephens-Scates; his siblings, Lavern Tyler, Violet Russell, Sylvia Crosby, Wayne Scates and Johnnie Scates; his brother-in-law Archie Langford; and his nephew Grant Langford.
He is survived by: his cousin Rev. Dee Hubbard; his wife Detta Schuler-Scates; his children, Kenneth Scates, Jr. and Terry Lindberg (Rich); his stepchildren, Amanda Whitt (David) and Russell Schuler (Renate); his sister Hazel MacArthur (Ron); his sisters-in-law, Bea Scates, Melba Johnson (Cliff), Joveta Hutto and Gynn Langford; his grandchildren, Brittney Lindberg, Ashley Jenkins (James), Michael Whitt (Helen), Justine Schuler-Williams (Chase) and Grant Roberts; and his great grandchildren, Remington, Brynlee and Lily. He is also survived by numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
