He was predeceased by: his parents, Fernando Serna and Louisa Serna (Mendoza); his son Ruben Cerna Jr.; and his brothers, Rosalio, Ramon and Rodolfo Serna.

He is survived by: his wife Frances Cerna; his children, Carol Rodriguez, Yolanda Gonzalez, Gloria Jacquez, Jessica Ferrel and Rudy Munoz; and his siblings, Remedios, Ismael, Cruz Serna and Maria Louisa Montez. He is also survived by Sixteen grandchildren, fifteen great grandchildren, and one great great grandchild.
