He was predeceased by: his parents, Loran Whatley and Viola Whatley (Koch); and his wife Catherine (Kay). He is survived by: his daughters, Sue Ellen Bibby of Dunellen, Maureen Stahl (James) of Seaville, Debra Whatley of Washington and Tara Laing of Glen Gardner; his grandchildren, Brennan Bibby Quagliana, Dennis Patrick Bibby III, Sean Bibby, James Stahl, Jr., Caitlin Nickel, Ceili Stahl, Catherine Sutter, Maren Hollenback, Peder Sarsten, Robert and Bridget Laing; his great grandchildren, Nathaniel, Jayden, Julian, Jordan, Gianna, Arabella, Annabelle, Henry, Kieran, Vivian, Rylen, Evelyn, Peder and Maeve; and his sister Jean Soper of Middlesex. He is also survived by nieces and nephews.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his memory to Our Lady of the Mount.
