He was predeceased by: his parents, John and Alice; his wife Dorothy Kearney; his children, Michael Kearney and Amy Kearney (Chaiya Laoteppitaks); his grandchildren, Lucy and Cooper Laoteppitaks; and his sister Patricia Albertson (John).

He is survived by: his sister-in-law Janet Ernst (David); his nieces and nephews, Scott Albertson, Kelly Bunce, Brian Ernst, Oralie Gallagher and Jonathan Litchenfeld; and his great-nieces, Sonja Albertson, Fiona Albertson, Maddie Ernst, Kinsley Ernst and Emily Gallagher.
