Tony was born in South Philadelphia in 1933, the youngest of four children to Salvatore and Carmela (neé Giordano) Bersito. He was a gifted athlete who excelled at baseball. After high school, Tony enlisted in the Army during the Korean War joining the prestigious 11th Airborne Division and serving until the war was over.
