He was predeceased by: his parents, Joseph Lee and Ellin L. Dowden (Sorensen); and his brother-in-law Robert DeYoung. He is survived by: his wife Lillian C. Dowden (Termini); his children, Julie A. Dowden, Joseph C. Dowden (Patricia M. Dowden) and Robert A. Dowden (Stevie L. Dowden); his grandchildren, Riley M. Dowden and Sophia R. Dowden; and his siblings, John Dowden, Holly DeYoung, Paula Dowden, Marjorie Dowden and Eric Sorensen (Linda). He is also survived by several nieces, nephews, cousins and dear friends.

“I wish to give my condolences to the family of Joseph Lee Dowden. I worked with him for many years at Picatinny Arsenal and always was impressed with his pleasant personality and knowledge. He worked in the Propellants and Explosives Division and was one of their most responsive and gregarious member engineers, a pleasure to work with. I was saddened to hear of his passing and I had stopped at his house to see how he was enjoying his retirement. I will miss his pleasant upbeat nature.”
