She was predeceased by: her parents, Joseph Merhar and Louise Merhar; and her siblings, Josephine, Carolyn, Albina and Albert.
She is survived by: her husband John P. Olatta; her daughters, MaryEllen (Jim Williamson) and Amy Dixon; and her granddaughters, Elise and Kara Dixon.
Her love of children's literature became the foundation for her bachelor's degree and then a Masters in Library Science.
