With heavy hearts, we announce the death of John A. Matthews III of South Orange, New Jersey, who passed away on February 26, 2021. Leave a sympathy message to the family on the memorial page of John A. Matthews III to pay them a last tribute.

He was predeceased by: his parents, Peggy Jo (Conlan) and John A. Matthews, Jr.; and his sisters, Patricia and Jane Marie. He is survived by: his wife Judith Anne Alexander; his children, Mariliz Loftus (Joe), John Matthews IV (Tammy) and Susan Apgood (Rick); his grandchildren, John, Patrick, Courtney, Molly, Jack, Logan, Emma, Robert, Matthew and Ricky; and his siblings, Joseph, Edwin, James, Margaret, Thomas, Brian and Marian.

Funeral Mass will be held at Our Lady of Sorrows Church, 217 Prospect Street in South Orange, and live streamed on the funeral home website (prestonfuneralhome. net), on Thursday, March 4th at 10:30 a. m., and visitation will be held beforehand from 9:00 to 10:15 a. m. Please be advised that face coverings are required, and social distancing guidelines will be observed.

“John Matthews was one of my idols. He was a brilliant trial lawyer with an incredible memory. He had a clarity of mind that broke down the most complex concepts into ideas easily understandable for jurors. I still pass down some of John's closing arguments to young lawyers. While John did not suffer fools gladly, he had a coterie of followers who loved him and tried to emulate him. Our softball games and golf outings were epic events. I would be proud to be considered one of his guys.”
