He was predeceased by: his former wife Frances Marion; his son James Burkhart Jr.; and his stepchildren, Kenneth R. Smith and Lynn Smith Hodge. He is survived by: his wife Anne (Matyas); his daughter Lynette Cromwell (Wayne); his grandchildren, Gregory W. Cromwell (Amanda), Kaitlyn Cromwell Methner (Steve), Bri-Mathias Hodge (Nanette), Colin Hodge, Trent Hess (Rachel), Richard, Michael and Matthew Smith; his great grandchildren, Javen, Ashlyn Smith, Sebastian, Dominic and Juliana Hodge; his daughter-in-law Linda Smith; his sister-in-law Bernice Marion; his niece Sarah Kinelski; and his nephews, Louis Sgro and Robert Marion (Laura).
