It is with deep sorrow that we announce the death of Stevens Jay Carter (Plainfield, New Jersey), who passed away on December 24, 2021, at the age of 63, leaving to mourn family and friends. He was predeceased by: his parents, Ruth Knight Carter of Washington and Thomas Andrew Carter, Jr.; and his brothers, Thomas Andrew Carter III of Des Moines, IA and William (Tracie) of Raleigh, NC.. He is survived by: his son Stevens Jay Carter, Jr. of Washington, DC; his wife Carol A. Swainson of Oakland, CA; his siblings, Donna Mial (Donald) of Raleigh, NC, Yvette C. DelValle of Plainfield, NJ and Alan (Tangela) of Raleigh, NC; and his stepmother DeLois S. Carter (late Thomas, Jr.). He is also survived by nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends.

In recent years, his artworks tackled the Corona Virus and other challenging social issues.

In lieu of flowers and in honor of Stevens Jay Carter legacy, donations may be made in honor of Stevens Jay Carter to the Joyce Gordon Foundation of the Arts located in Oakland, California. A donation link will be provided in the near future.
