He was predeceased by: his parents, Robert Hems and Willamina Hems (Henderson); his wife Harriet Hems (Oldinsky); and his daughter Bernice Joan Hems. He is survived by: his children, Harriet Hems Wright (James H. Wright) of North Brunswick, Christine Diem (Jeffrey Diem) of Kingwood and Peter Hems of Asbury Park; and his grandchildren, Harrison James Wright, Joseph Hems Wright, Ashley Elizabeth Diem and Christopher James Diem.
He was elected National Commander of the Military Order of the Purple Heart for 1991-1992 and served as a director of the National Foundation for the Military Order of the Purple Heart.
