He was predeceased by: his parents, Eugene W. Umstead and Helen D. Young; his wife Betty Lou; his son James Jr.; and the parents of child, Eugene and Helen.

He is survived by: his children, Greg Umstead (Wendy) and Gina D'Antonio (Al); and his grandchildren, Sierra (Vinny), Allyson, Brianna, Jake, Gregory, Kaitlyn and James.
