He was predeceased by: his parents, Peggy Jo (Conlan) and John A. Matthews Jr.; and his siblings, Patricia, Jane Marie and John A Matthews III (Jack).
He is survived by: his wife Maryellen Froelich Matthews of Maplewood; his children, Brian C Matthews, Jr., Gregory and Courtney Hancur (Matthew); his grandchildren, Conlan, Thomas, Finnegan, Margaret Matthews, Ryan, Marie and Dylan Hancur; and his siblings, Joseph, Edwin, James, Margaret, Thomas and Marian Matthews Power. He is also survived by numerous cousins, countless nieces and nephews and grand nieces and nephews, and many great friends and co-workers.
