He is survived by: his wife Patricia; his children, Geoffrey, Meredith Sawyer (Bill), Joseph Jr. (Susan) and Gregory (Justina); and his grandchildren, Abigail Sawyer, Jackson Filinuk, Rory Filinuk, Emma Sawyer, Kyle Filinuk and Brooke Filinuk.

Services are private, but in lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Angelic Health Hospice Care or the Alzheimer's Association.

“R.I.P. Joe Filinuk. A colleague at Haddonfield High, Joe usually lit up a room often in incendiary fashion. His students took his spirited instruction first with trepidation and then enjoyment. Who but Joe would introduce students to Moby Dick or urge them to comb the news for grammatical error? A dominating conversationalist, Joe stood for the truth as he saw it and made others do the same. So may friends and the Paint Crew lift one at Donkey's in his honor. He will be sorely missed.”
