He was loved and cherished by many people including: his wife Hester; his children, Audrey Rentiers (William), John Jay Van Buiten (Joanne) and Russell Van Buiten (Debbie); his grandchildren, Kara, Kevin (Yasmeen), Nicole (Mike), Alexandra (Dave), John Michael (Alyssa), Jason (Cori), Jamie, Julie and Jayna; his great grandchildren, P. J., Samantha, Addison, Ellie, Hallie, Liam, Jacob and Leith; and his sisters, Joan Irwin, Gertrude Van Wyck and Katherine Easterhoff.
