“I am extremely sad to read of the passing of Dr. Avery. I had the pleasure of taking two of his History courses at HCC. I was a poor kid from the sticks who was the first in his family to earn a college degree. I didn’t have a lot of confidence when I first met the great professor. However, success in his classes helped build it in me. When he told me that the tests that he gave at HCC were the same ones that he gave at the University of Oregon, I realized that I could do things. Thank you, sir.”
